Family Reading Partnership Volunteers Make a Difference!
By donating a small amount of your time, you help us give young families quality experiences with literature. There are many different ways to help. We can find just the right volunteer position for you. Call us at (607) 277-8602 to find out more or fill out our Volunteer Registration Form.
- Deliver books to doctors' offices and other places in Ithaca and around Tompkins County for our programs that give new books to children. Mileage is reimbursed at the NYS rate.
Time commitment: 1-2 hours per week
- Help at our office in Danby (5 miles south of Ithaca). We always have book labeling, sorting and cleaning, flier folding and counting. Bring a friend and work together if you'd like!
Time commitment: any time you have to spare! Come once or come regularly
- Tend book crates and bookshelves as part of our Bright Red Bookshelf program. This involves picking up donated books and then stocking a bookshelf with used books.
Time commitment: one hour every few weeks
- Plan a Book Drive to collect used books for our Bright Red Book Shelf program. We have guidelines to help you plan and conduct a book drive in your community.
Time commitment: intermittently for 2-3 months
- Group Projects -- perfect for girl scouts, boy scouts, college groups, etc. Label books for school giveaways, prepare books for babies born at the hospital, sort and count fliers, or clean and label used books.
Time commitment: 1.5-3 hours per time, as your group is available
- Read books to children at day care centers as part of our Traveling Books program. We supply a rotating assortment of books.
Time commitment: 1/2 hour every two weeks during the school year
- Interact with children and families around books at WIC sites. This is an opportunity to introduce books and reading aloud into the lives of young families.
Time commitment: 3 hours once a month
- Help with a Book Giveaway of new gift books at WIC sites as part of our Gift of Reading program. Help families choose a book for each of their children, then gift-wrap the books for the families to take home.
Time commitment: 3 hours once in November, December, or January
- Organize an event at our annual celebration of children's literature, the Kids' Book Fest. Whatever your interest you can find a spot on our planning committee. The activities at the Book Fest include cozy reading areas, interactive books, performances, art and book making projects, and working with area schools.
Time commitment: about 2 hours of planning once a month in Fall, then time as needed in October/November, before and during the Book Fest, depending on the activity.
